Physical Education
If you have a passion for sports and exercise, would enjoy coaching a sports team, or would like to help kids become more confident and excited about physical activity, a Bachelor of Science in EC-12 Physical Education can help you reach those goals. This program helps students develop skills and strategies to teach physical education and coach sports at various levels. Courses include many opportunities to visit schools to watch physical education teachers and coaches in action, in settings ranging from track team workouts to a movement class for students with physical disabilities. Upon graduation, students are qualified to apply for their Texas teacher certification (P.E. EC-12) and are eligible to teach physical education and coach in public and private schools, kindergarten through twelfth grade.

Growing up in a small town where “everybody knew everybody” and where family came first, UMHB just “felt right” when Baylor Mullins was looking at universities. “Getting to know the coaches and building personal relationships with them made me feel at home at UMHB,” said Mullins, who played football all four years for the Crusaders. And when it came to choosing what field he would study, that came easy, too, since he grew up in a family of coaches, including his older brother, father, and grandfather. “Growing up in a football family was one of the main reasons I went to UMHB, because it had such a successful program. I thought there wouldn’t be any better place to go than UMHB.”

On average, 95% of the graduates from this program pass their state certification exams and become certified teachers and coaches in Texas each year. Many successfully complete certifications in other areas as well, to broaden their career options.
All classes are taught by full-time faculty who have earned advanced and terminal degrees within the physical education/teacher education profession and have had K-12 teaching experience.
EC-12 Physical Education majors enjoy many opportunities to get involved outside of the classroom as volunteer coaches and student mentors.
Upon passing their certification exams, graduates of this program average a job placement rate of nearly 100% annually.
