Advanced Research Colloquium

The Advanced Research Colloquium gives English majors and minors (and some selected interdisciplinary students) the experience in conducting research and presenting at an international conference of professional scholars.

Students selected for this program will

• Research topics of current interest, which engage faith and learning.
• Work with English faculty on student research.
• Experience an all-expenses paid 3-day, 2-night trip to the Baylor Symposium on Faith and Culture.
• Present research as part of student panel to professionals and students in various fields.

Students will read selections from books, articles, and other resources provided by the English program. They will meet with professors during the course of the semester (usually semi-monthly) to discuss the readings as well as workshop their conference papers which they will present at the symposium.

Each year, in conjunction with the Advanced Research Colloquium, the English Department presents the W.F. Hutmacher Award to the student who produces the best distinguished scholarship at the Baylor Symposium on Faith and Culture. Given in honor of W. F. Hutmacher, a former UMHB English faculty member who served the University for 22 years, this monetary award is presented each Spring at the annual Awards Day presentations. Winners’ names are displayed on a commemorative plaque in the English Department.
