Audition Procedure for New and Transfer Students
All prospective music majors and minors must audition for acceptance to the UMHB Department of Music. Audition requirements can be found below. Students who audition will automatically be considered for a scholarship. Scholarships are available to music majors and music minors, but priority will be given to music majors. Selecting an early audition date improves your chances of receiving a scholarship, as they are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
A pianist will be provided for auditions; however, students may bring their own pianist if they wish. Recorded accompaniments are not permitted.
Prospective students should apply to UMHB and complete the admission process before submitting an Audition Request Form.
Admission Requirements
The student must have graduated from a regionally accredited or state accredited high school with 24 units which must include:
- English (4)
- Social Science (3.5)
- Science (3)
- Foreign Language (2)
- Mathematics (3)
- Or received the General Education Diploma (GED) with a 50 composite score
Prospective students should consider all potential scheduling conflicts before submitting an Audition Request Form. After the form is received, each student will be contacted with a specific audition time on the date the student has requested.

Audition Requirements by Performing Medium

Required:
- 2 songs in contrasting style with piano accompaniment performed from memory.
Preferred:
- One (1) art song (or aria) in a foreign language – with piano accompaniment performed from memory.
- One (1) art song in English OR one (1) musical theatre selection – with piano accompaniment performed from memory.
- 2 pieces from memory: one (1) piece from the Baroque or Classical period, AND one (1) piece from the Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary period. One of these pieces must be in a fast tempo. - performed from memory
- Major/minor scales & arpeggios.
- The audition will also include sight-reading exercises.
- Class 1 or Class 2 Solo from the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List (if the work has multiple movements, perform two movements that are contrasting in style), OR
- Play two Region Etudes of contrasting styles.
- From memory: perform major scales (through the first four flats and sharps) as many octaves as is comfortable to the player.
- From memory: perform a chromatic scale the full range of the instrument as is comfortable to the player.
- The audition will also include sight-reading exercises.
- Two contrasting pieces from the classical repertoire (on a nylon string guitar, no plectrum, with proper classical technique) The Studies of Sor, Carcassi, Brouwer are permitted
- One movement of a Cello or Lute Suite by JS Bach
- 2 “Segovia Scales” of the player’s choice
- A short sight-reading excerpt
- One two-mallet solo/etude
- One concert snare drum solo/etude
- One four-mallet keyboard solo/etude (optional)
- One timpani solo/etude (preferably on 4 kettles)
- Sight-reading on keyboard, snare, and timpani Drum set (not required but if applicable).
- Demonstrate knowledge of the following styles: Jazz, Latin, and Rock.
Note: It is highly suggested that all solos come from the Texas PML (Class 1 or 2)

- Advanced Snare Drum Studies, Mitchell Peters
- Portraits in Rhythm, Anthony Cirone
- The Solo Snare Drummer, Vic Firth
- 12 Etudes for 2 Mallet Marimba, Larry Lawless
- Modern School for the Xylophone and Marimba, Morris Goldenberg
- Masterpieces for Marimba, Thomas McMillan
- Marimba: Technique through Music, Mark Ford
- Impressions on Wood, Julie Davila
- Musical Etudes for the Advanced Timpanist, Ron Fink
- Exercises, Etudes and Solos for the Timpani, Raynor Carroll
- The Solo Timpanist, Vic Firth

Scholarships
During the formal audition for acceptance, students will be considered for a music scholarship based upon their musical and academic abilities, without regard to gender, ethnicity, religion, age or handicap. Simply complete your application to UMHB and request an audition. Awards up to full tuition available.
