A statewide anti-abortion rally took place in Austin on Saturday, Jan. 25. The rally is an annual demonstration aimed at commemorating the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade. Hundreds of people were seen carrying signs reading “Defund Planned Parenthood” and “Pro-life is evidence-based”.
Among the masses was Ali Steadman, a junior film and English major and president of Cru for Life at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Cru for Life is a pro-life organization at UMHB and values community involvement and service.
Steadman, who grew up in a pro-life household became passionate about the subject in high school and continued that passion at UMHB. “I have always had a strong sense of justice and in my opinion, abortion is unjust since it ends a human life. However, more recently my heart has been hurting for women and men who are not being told all their options when facing a pregnancy crisis.” said Steadman.
Texas has banned all abortions expect when the mother is at risk of death, however thousands of abortion pills continue to flow into Texas. During the rally, an audio file was played to the crowd, the file featured Sen. John Coryn who praised Texas laws that offer no exceptions in the case of rape, incest or fetal abnormalities.
“I can say without a doubt that Texas is the most pro-life state in the entire nation,” stated Coryn.
The rally ended with a prayer and worship that exceeded Steadman's expectations. “It was super encouraging to see so many people marching for life. Sometimes when you're advocating for a cause it can seem lonely, and you can feel outnumbered, so it was awesome to see that level of support and advocacy. My favorite part of the rally was the prayer and worship that followed. Personally, this was significant and important for me, and a reminder that the pro-life movement should be approached with prayer and worship.” stated Steadman.
