STARS Driver Program
All Personnel must be STARS program qualified to drive university vehicles including sedans, pickups, min-vans, SUVs, 15 passenger vans and carts.
Eligibility
All drivers must possess a valid driver’s license and meet eligibility criteria outlined in the Business Transportation Policy posted at https://www.umhb.edu/resources/hr/policies (see Appendix 1/Driver Qualifications) and must successfully complete the applicable Stars on-line training program.
- Vehicle drivers must generally be 21 years of age (18 for employees & students with certain restrictions).
- Cart drivers must be 18 years of age.
- Drivers that need to tow trailers must have significant experience.
Qualification Procedure
Supervisors & the driver applicant must complete the STARS Application Form and submit to the University Police Department along with a copy of the applicant’s driver's license.
The UMHB driver applicant must (1) view either the Vehicle or the Cart training program that includes a review of the university's Business Transportation Policy, and (2) must also complete the applicable Quiz located on the last slide of the presentation (when submitted the quiz is automatically sent to the University Police Department).
Vehicle qualified drivers are also qualified to operate carts and do not need to complete the Cart training program.
GUEST applicants (i.e. summer camps, etc.) must (1) view the GUEST Cart training program and (2) complete the Quiz (on last slide of presentation).
Supervisors are responsible for conducting orientation with new drivers for each type of cart/utility vehicle to be driven. A Cart orientation checklist is available for that purpose (to be retained by the respective department).
