Dr. Stephen Crawford

Dr. Stephen Crawford is Director of Percussion Studies and Professor of Music History at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. He holds the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education from Minot State University, the Master of Music Degree from the University of Northern Iowa, and the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Dr. Crawford is the principal timpanist with the Temple Symphony Orchestra, and conductor of the UMHB Percussion Ensemble.

A nationally recognized conductor and scholar of wind and percussion music, Dr. Crawford has conducted performances at state, national, and international conferences and has presented percussion clinics at the Music Education Associations of eleven states in the US. He is in demand as a percussion artist, clinician, lecturer, and guest conductor having appeared throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Ireland, Taiwan, Indonesia, Scotland, England, the Czech Republic, China, Russia, Belgium, Peru, Netherlands, Latvia, and Estonia. Dr. Crawford lived in London, England as the UMHB faculty member for the London Studies Program in 2009 where he lectured courses in British Music History.

Dr. Crawford represents Majestic Percussion, Mapex Drums, and Innovative Percussion as performing artist and clinician, and HoneyRock Publishing as a composer. An award-winning composer, his works have been performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. As a university scholar, Dr. Crawford was awarded two Faculty Research Grants to allow study in Indonesia, and the Czech Republic and has also conducted research in Russia, Belgium, Ecuador, and Peru. He has been the recipient of the two UMHB Faculty Awards; Excellence in Teaching, and Excellence in Scholarship, has served as President of the UMHB Faculty Assembly, and is a past nominee for Composer of the Year by the Texas Music Teachers Association. He is a past President of the Texas Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society, a position he held for five years. Dr. Crawford’s biographical record is included in “Who’s Who in America” where he was awarded the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. He is in his twenty-third year of service to UMHB.
