Dr. John S. Vassar serves as Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, a position that he has held since summer of 2017. Before coming to Belton, he served as the Provost and Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Louisiana State University in Shreveport.
A native of Shreveport, Vassar earned his BA in History from LSU Shreveport, his M.A. in Theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Baylor University. He is the author of numerous articles in the fields of philosophy, religious studies, and film studies, as well as the book Recalling a Story Once Told: An Intertextual Reading of the Psalter and the Pentateuch.
Dr. Vassar is an Intentional Interim Pastor and has served churches in Louisiana and Texas. He and and his wife, Karen Vassar, have three amazing children and are members of First Baptist Church, in Belton, Texas.
