Types of Aid
Financial Aid basically consists of 3 different types of aid: scholarships and grants, work study, and loans.
Grants/Scholarships
- Grants and scholarships are often called “gift aid” because they are free money—financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid.
- Grants and scholarships are awarded based on various factors such as merit (academics), financial need (determined by the FAFSA), housing, or various other reasons.
- Total grants and scholarships, including outside scholarships, will not exceed tuition.
Outside Scholarships
Outside scholarships are not controlled or awarded by the university but by the donors themselves. A third party awards the money and then sends it to UMHB to be disbursed to the student account. The University does not endorse, sponsor, or have any role in the administration of these private aid programs and therefore disclaims any responsibility or liability for any information provided.
- Local Scholarships:
Start your search through your high school counselor for a roster of community-based scholarships including local businesses or organizations that provide scholarships. Most UMHB students who earn outside scholarships qualify for local rather than national scholarships.
- Regional or National Scholarships:
The links provided below are outside of UMHB; however, these sites have vetted the scholarship offerings and provide you an opportunity to search for regional or national scholarships. Consider using a different email address than you normally use for these sites to collect all scholarships in one location and reduce excessive emails in your work or personal email accounts.
Work Program
- All eligible (citizen or eligible non-citizen) undergraduate students will be emailed instructions, in early summer, on how to identify and apply for work program jobs.
- The work program allows students to work on campus at the prevailing minimum wage. A few off-campus positions are also available.
- Work program jobs consist of an expected 13 hours of work per week for each 15-week semester (195 hours total) and have an approximate earning potential of $1,400 per semester.
- Once you have secured a work program job and completed all work-related documents (I9, W-4, and work permit), one of 3 work program funds will be added to your financial aid package: Federal Work Study, Texas College Work Study, or Institutional Work Program.
- Hours worked are recorded on the UMHB timekeeping system as instructed by your supervisor.
- Hours worked are processed every other Friday through the Business Office. Students have the option of applying checks to outstanding student account balance or direct deposit to their personal bank account.
