Belton, Texas - A new club sport is coming to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Even though the school’s new Bass Fishing Team won’t begin competing until the fall, the group has already reeled in a notable local recruit.
The team began with a fishing trip between UMHB students Carter Vaughn and Cabe Isbell, who would eventually become its president and vice president, respectively.
“We were fishing on Lake Belton one day and said ‘All these other small Baptist schools have bass fishing teams, why not UMHB?’” Vaughn said.
The two approached the university’s Student Government Association, which approved the creation of the club. Once it was official, the group began recruiting members. To date, eight students have committed to take part in competitions beginning this fall.
As they have worked to get the team organized and plan its first season, Vaughn and Isbell have been helped by two surprising sources of advice, a new recruit and a future competitor.
