Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Art Department and the College of Visual and Performing Arts are proud to present the exhibition Whimsical: Paintings by S. Chuck McCarter February 17, through March 6, 2020, in the gallery of the Baugh Center for Visual Arts. A public reception and artist’s talk will be at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 17. This event is free and open to the public.
McCarter’s acrylic paintings are about childhood stories, fairy tales, ancient historical epics, the Bible, Native American narratives, and careful observations of daily life and its oddities. The artist explores the human form, animals, metaphorical imagery, and multicultural references in his paintings. He describes art as his mind at play and says that colors, shapes, and surface textures are the sandbox from which his content emerges.
McCarter served in the U.S. Air Force, and the GI Bill® allowed him to become the first member of his family to attend college, beginning at El Centro. He would eventually transfer to the University of North Texas, where he earned a graduate degree in studio drawing and painting. Soon after, McCarter was offered an art professor position at Anderson University in South Carolina, where he spent 10 years building the program before moving on to educator positions in Virginia, Michigan, and Mississippi. During his decades of teaching, McCarter also curated exhibits for such luminaries as Milton Avery and Jasper Johns. He studied nationally and in both Italy and Greece.
One of his last university positions was teaching as an art adjunct at UMHB. He lives and works near White Rock Lake in East Dallas.
