Belton, TX - On Saturday, August 24, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor students celebrated the Welcome Week tradition of Love CTX. Love CTX is a designed to help new students discover service opportunities and to grow closer to their Cru Groups through serving the community. This year, students chose one of three projects, all of them on the UMHB campus.
"It’s really awesome to watch upperclassmen and freshmen come together, even when it’s really hot and humid, to be the hands and feet of Jesus," Lexi Lyles, a Welcome Week Cru Leader Captain, said.
While in past years Love CTX required students to travel to organizations around the community to serve, this year's event took place in front of Luther Memorial, at the center of the UMHB campus. Students were given the choice of three possible projects. They could make dog toys out of recycled t-shirts, write thank you notes to area teachers, or pack lunches for area school kids.
Over 500 dogs toys, constructed out of cords of old t-shirts were donated to animal shelters in Belton, Temple, Killeen, and Harker Heights. Students also wrote 100 letters to university teachers and staff members, thanking them for their service. The Welcome Week students also packed an astonishing 3,375 bags of food, which equates to more than 50,000 meals. These donations were made through the One More Child organization, which will distribute them to students in the Belton Independent School District.
