Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor has named Dr. Joan Berry as dean of the College of Education as of Jun 1, 2018. Dr. Berry has been a member of UMHB’s education faculty since 2007, teaching courses in child development, classroom management, diverse populations, and curriculum design. She has served as department chair (2014-16), associate dean (2016-17) and most recently interim dean of the college (2017-18).
Dr. Berry attended the University of North Texas, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Art and English Education. She continued her education at the University of Texas in Austin, completing a Master of Arts in English with a Reading Specialist Endorsement. She received her doctorate in Educational Administration from Texas A&M University.
“Joan Berry is a gifted educator and communicator, and she has done an excellent job as our interim dean of education this year,” said Dr. John Vassar, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “We look forward to a bright future for the College of Education under her leadership.”
Dr. Berry taught in the Austin, Round Rock, and Temple schools for 25 years before moving to the Education Service Center Region 12 in Waco, where she served as a reading specialist and director of core curriculum. She also taught English composition and literature courses at Austin Community College in Austin. She is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
