Belton, TX – On Saturday, October 28, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will host Science Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon in the York Science Center and Wells Science Hall on the UMHB campus. This event, which is designed to let young people and their families engage with science in fun and exciting ways, is open the public. The price of admission is one non-perishable food item per family.
“This year we are putting a focus on the event being student-led, student-driven, and student-focused,” Dr. Kaleb Heinrich said.
“We have around 70 student and faculty volunteers,” Heinrich said. “It keeps getting bigger, and bigger. This may be our biggest one yet.”
This year’s event will feature some popular demonstrations and activities from previous Science Saturdays, including a digital experience designed by Computer Science and Engineering students, and pig dissections being conducted by representatives of the Biology Department.
“Kids can put on gloves and explore actual anatomy if they want,” Heinrich said. “For some that might be too gross, but others get really excited.”
There are also a number of groups that have developed new offerings for this year’s Science Saturday, including a hands-on genetics activity that challenges them to build their own monster.
Heinrich says that Science Saturday is geared mostly for children under the age of twelve.
“I’m going to be bringing my two-year-old,” Heinrich said, “and I think there are some things that he will be excited to do.”
