Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor College of Visual and Performing Arts presents the work of four graduating art majors in an exhibit titled “Blended Backgrounds.” The works displayed, which include paintings, graphic design, and children’s book illustrations, will be on display in the gallery of the Baugh Center for the Visual Arts from Thursday, November 30, to Friday, December 8.
A public reception is planned for Friday, December 8, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. in art center. Both this event and the exhibit are free and open to the public.
The four candidates for the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree are Emily Fletcher from Corsicana, Erin Dona from Bonham, Maria Ramos from Puerto Rico, and Callie Milligan from Austin.
The Adventures of C.P. and Archie is a children’s book created by Fletcher. The book contains twenty-two pages of hand drawn images telling the story of an adventurous little boy and his orangutan companion.
Dona exhibits a series of portraits, including a self-portrait, of immediate family members made with acrylic on plywood. Each painting also utilizes string to interconnect it with each other piece.
Ramos presents introspective cultural reflections based on her home in Puerto Rico. She creates digital paintings and mixed-media books about local folklore, where stories unfold among the patterns of exotic plants and architectural structures.
Millegan’s oil paintings use surrealistic symbols and spaces to represent memories and personal growth from her childhood. Her expressions reflect moments when her resistance to conform led to her becoming her own person.
Seniors receiving an art degree from UMHB are required to present a polished, cohesive gallery exhibit with their best work and defend their art thesis before a faculty committee. This rigorous capstone experience prepares students for professional careers as artists in the workforce or for the further graduate studies in the visual arts.
The gallery of the Baugh Center for the Visual Arts is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information visit the art department website or email Hershall Seals.
