Courses
Students in the MSA program complete eight courses which are three credit hour each as part of the core curriculum, which is a total of 24 credit hours. These core courses are offered in Fall and Spring:
Catalog InformationAdvanced Accounting
Fraud Examination
Advanced Taxation
Accounting Communications
Advanced Auditing
Not-for-Profit (Gov’t) Accounting
Ethics for Accountants
Advanced Cost Accounting
All courses required to qualify to sit for the CPA exam are approved by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA).
Courses are flipped in alternating years. A course in the A term one year will be in the B term then next. This was specifically developed to allow professional working students to have the option of not having classes during tax season.
In addition to the courses above you will successfully complete two elective courses (three credit hours each) to complete your degree through the Modular Masters Program. Students have the option of extending the degree to 36 credit hours to complete a concentration within the Modular Masters.
For students interested in sitting for the CPA exam who have earned an online undergraduate accounting degree: The Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSPBA) stipulates that candidates must complete 30 hours of upper-division accounting courses. In the past TSPBA required 15 of these hours to be face-to-face, but effective Summer 2020 they approved changes that allow all 30 hours to be completed online. The online MSA program at UMHB meets the 30 hour requirement for the CPA exam.
