First Generation College Students
First To Go. First To Graduate.
First to go to college. A courageous, exciting, and scary step towards your future. College is an experience that both challenges you and changes you. Neither one of your parents has their bachelor’s degree, so no one at home can offer advice or share their experiences.
At UMHB, we are here to welcome you to our family. Our F2G program is put in place to help you, a new student, achieve academic and personal success. First-generation college students at UMHB are students who are the first in their family to work towards obtaining a bachelor’s degree. Nearly one-third of our freshmen class are first-generation students, as are many of our faculty members and staff. We know our first-generation students need support, from beginning to end and a strong support system can make a difference in whether or not a student excels.
Our F2G program helps these students by offering a variety of opportunities and resources, from academic support to social events. UMHB is proud of their first-generation students and they are dedicated to student success.
First Gen Resources
The purpose of F2G (First To Go. First To Graduate.) is to provide support, recognition, and encouragement for our first-generation college student population on the UMHB campus. The program hopes to positively impact first-generation student retention and graduation rates.
How do we define first-generation?
A first-generation student is anyone whose parent(s) or guardian(s) did not complete a four-year bachelor’s degree from a university or college in the United States.
